The Shedd Aquarium

If you are planning a trip to Chicago, whether for business or pleasure, be sure to include the John G. Shedd Aquarium on your list of things to do and places to visit.
The Shedd Aquarium is in a very convenient location in the Grant Park Museum Complex. The complex is at the intersections of Lake Shore Drive and East Roosevelt Road, making it very accessible.
The building that houses the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago was designed by the noted architect firm Graham, Anderson, Probst, and White. Construction was completed in 1929 and experienced an addition made of glass in 1991.
The building was designed by the architect to take advantage of the best Chicago has to offer. For example, the glass extension of the Shedd Aquarium is particularly beautiful and affords visitors a magnificent view of Lake Michigan.
In addition, when visitors glance around them at the top of the steps leading to the Shedd Aquarium's entrance, they will be treated to a lovely view of Chicago's famous skyline.
Once inside the Shedd Aquarium, fans of marine life will be immediately enchanted by the presence of the little beluga whale born in the summer. He has grown quite a bit since then and has discovered the joy of playing with objects, as all babies do.
Although the baby beluga does attract a good bit of attention, there are six exhibits in all to educate and excite all who visit Chicago's Shedd Aquarium.
The Wild Reef is home to the Shedd Aquarium's twenty-four sharks that live in a 400,000 gallon aquarium. In addition to sharks, the wild reef is home to such exciting objects as garden eels, live coral, a mangrove forest, and a lagoon. In addition, visitors will have a sense of the importance of conservation when they learn of a fishing community that elected to preserve their reef when it was threatened with destruction.
Next up is the Amazon Rising exhibit at the Shedd Aquarium. In this location, exhibits are designed to look like swiftly moving river channels, calm and serene lakes, and the tops of trees that have just been flooded. In these habitats, anacondas, piranhas, spiders, poisonous frogs, venomous ants, and tons of catfish can be viewed.
The Caribbean Reef is home to a sea turtle, moray eel, sting rays, and many fish. The setting of this exhibit is particularly interesting as it is in a circular 90,000 gallon tank that can be viewed from all sides. You will also want to take advantage of the opportunity to see the divers feeding the animals and giving educational lectures about the sea life in the Caribbean Reef.
Shedd Aquarium's Water World exhibit takes a broader look at marine life by exploring the habitats of various water environments. In this exhibit, you will find the oldest animal at the Shedd Aquarium. An Australian lungfish that arrived in 1933 is still living and on exhibit.
The marine life of the Pacific Northwest is chronicled in the Oceanarium exhibit. Dolphins, otter, and sea stars as well as the aforementioned beluga whale call this area home. The Shedd Museum has also incorporated a 35,000 gallon veterinary pool into the exhibit providing for even more education of these fascinating animals.
A final exhibit that is temporary in nature is the Lizard area. The Komodo dragon is the main draw in this location. Other animals included are the crocodile monitor, Tokay geckos, and chameleons. Visitors have a chance to learn about theses lizards and what makes them unique in the animal kingdom.
If you are interested in making a visit to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, plan on spending two and a half hours minimum. Sunday mornings are the least crowded and afford a leisurely pace for families.
Ticket prices are $23 for adults and $16 for seniors and children ages three through twelve. Hours are seasonal, so be sure to call ahead or visit the website before scheduling your visit.
Chicago's Shedd Aquarium is a great location for all of the family to have a great time and learn a great deal in the process. So, come plan a trip for your time in Chicago and see what all the excitement is about!
