Tommy Gun's Garage

Published On: Oct 26, 2006

Don't get the wrong impression. Tommy Gun's Garage is not an auto shop, nor a sportsman's paradise. It is more of a modern speakeasy with an inner city musical comedy revue flair for the outrageous laughs that people expect in a place like this. Oh, and be prepared to move to center stage because you are a part of the act.

Tommy Gun's Garage bills itself as "The Roaring Twenties Speakeasy" in the 21st century. Harking back to a time of prohibition and gangsters like Al Capone and "Leftie," this place is flapping. It's no coincidence that Chicago was a hotbed of illegal activity during the Twenties and that illegal speakeasies proliferated in this city like moonshine in the home state of Al Gore. At Tommy Gun's Garage, you can feel like you are a part of the underbelly of Chicago during one of the richest periods of American history as revenuers and law enforcers raid your table, pull you up on stage and force you to take the "sobriety test." Then, there's Vito, the gangster, who is well known for his interrogations. You don't want to meet him, or do you?

Along with the sobriety tests and interrogations, there's plenty of food and drinks for everyone as well as dancing with dapper dons and dolls. You'll hear the best of period music from Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Chicago's Sinfully Orchestra. The atmosphere is raucous and anything but silent - it should be illegal.

Even the walls scream at this joint. A 1928 Model "A" Ford on decoration in your room, in plain view from your table nonetheless, will beckon you back to the day. Albums from the music of that period, silent movies, replicas of the St. Valentines Day Wall, and memorabilia that speaks easy on the eyes. This is one cool place.

On the menu is pasta, chicken, pork, prime rib, and lasagna. Too American for you? Don't worry. You can wash it down with hooch. That's liquor. Beer. Wine. Alcohol. Isn't that what it's all about?

Of course, if you don't want the strong stuff you can always opt for coffee or tea. Da gang is always aiming to please.

Matinees are on the first and third Wednesday each month and if you were lucky enough to have lived during the Twenties, or if you are a senior citizen in the eyes of the law, then you can enjoy the senior citizen matinee tour with special pricing.

Tommy Gun's Garage offers group pricing for parties of 20 or more, has a secured reservation area on its web site, and planned meetings for larger groups, usually 60 people or more. Private parties come complete with all the gangster shootings and criminal interrogations, audience participation, and good clean family fun. This includes a Gangbusters Radio Play with Mae West, Jimmy Cagney, and Groucho Marx. In some cases, they will even customize the entertainment for you and they require a password to enter so no one can crash your party.
