The Chicago Jazz Festival, one of the oldest and most popular musical event in Chicago, has been around since 1979. It has since become a Labor Day tradition that attracts visitors from afar and brings locals together. 

The first Chicago Jazz Festival was scheduled by the city of Chicago as a way of bringing together three separate jazz festivals that were scheduled in the city during the same month - all sponsored, as the Chicago Jazz Festival is now, by the Jazz Institute of Chicago.

When you make plans to attend the Chicago Jazz Festival, you will have the opportunity to hear music from a wide variety of Jazz music ranging from traditional to avant garde.  Even better, you'll get to experience those musicians who are out there keeping the spirit of Jazz greats like Miles Davis and Ella Fitzgerald alive.

But the Chicago Jazz Festival should not be thought of as just another music festival in Chicago. The Chicago Jazz festival is a celebration of Chicago itself, as well as of jazz music.

At the Chicago Jazz Festival, you will be able to see a wide variety of musicians that are local to Chicago and those from around the country.

In addition to Jazz musicians, the Chicago Jazz Festival also allows fans of the music, as well as those who are hearing Jazz for the first time, to learn more about the art.

The past, present and future of the wide variety of jazz forms will be talked about and will be explored. You will be able to listen Jazz scholars talk about their first experiences with the musical art form and discuss where they think the art of the Jazz is headed. You will be able to learn more about Jazz legends such as Duke Ellington and John Coltrane.

You'll be able to go from conversations about jazz as it was played in the past to hearing young students of the Jazz Institute of Chicago talk about their learning and about why they want to keep the art of the Jazz alive. And, if it interests you, you will even be able to spend time getting to know others who love jazz just as much as you do.
