Charlie Trotter's

How many chefs and restaurant owners get their own Wikipedia listing? Charlie Trotter does.

That's because Charlie Trotter's has a national reputation for its service and quality dining experience. In fact, Charlie Trotter's is frequently featured in upscale magazines such as Wine Spectator, which called the restaurant "The Best Restaurant in the World for Wine and Food" in 1998. In 2000, the magazine named Charlie Trotter's "America's Best Restaurant." Who are we to argue?

Charlie Trotter began his cooking career in 1982 and opened his restaurant in 1987. He hosts the cooking show The Kitchen Sessions with Charlie Trotter on PBS and is the author of several books on cooking. In addition, he has several gourmet foods on the market with his name. If that isn't enough for achievement, Charlie Trotter has exemplified his good name by making a cameo appearance in the popular 1997 film My Best Friend's Wedding, playing the role of a screaming, angry chef who yells "If you don't get this right, I'll kill your whole family."

Charlie Trotter's restaurant is out of the price range for many people. That may be why it is such a treat to eat there. If you can afford it, it's well worth the visit. The plates can cost as much as $200. Upscale? Yes. Overpriced? Not if you like world-class cooking.

One of only two five-star restaurants in Chicago, Charlie Trotter's continually sets the pace in the culinary arts for chefs all around the world. With three menus to order from - the Grand Menu, the Vegetable Menu, and the Kitchen Table Menu - all guests are sure to find something to their liking. The range of the chef's menus is wide but the quality is as narrow as a toothpick - it is the best of the finest you'll find anywhere. His menus daily offer such delicate morsels as Indiana bobwhite quail, North Dakota buffalo, and Hawaiian gindai. Trotter's use of vinaigrettes, purees, and light sauces emulsify and satisfy.

Charlie Trotter builds his menus one small portion at a time. His philosophy is to lay a foundation of tasteful elegance with the first helping, then to build off of that. That's why diners often walk away singing crescendos of delight after a meal at this Chicago restaurant. Whether your taste buds are savoring the Michigan Raspberries with Ricotta and Fennel off of the Grand Menu, the Illinois Heirloom Tomatoes with Leek Confit off of the Vegetable Menu, or the Eel Terrine with Spicy Miso off of the Kitchen Table Menu, you will find the flavors pleasing and balanced with culture. What's more, your menu item will be complimented by one of the fine wine's Charlie Trotter's offers on its Wine Menu. Be prepared, though, these are some of the best labels in the world.

Charlie Trotter's doesn't serve cocktails and reservations are required by fax or telephone. The restaurant's web site recommends making reservations four weeks in advance (10-12 weeks for weekend reservations). Gentlemen should wear jackets; however, ties are optional. The restaurant is smoke free and the first floor offers disability access. Private dining is also available.

In 2000, Charlie Trotter started Trotter's To Go, a catering service with the same attention to quality and service that Trotter built his restaurant reputation on. The honey-lacquered Peking duck is just one example of the worldly fine cuisine available and Trotter maintains his commitment to using the best, freshest cultural food ingredients he can find. Trotter's To Go Express offers an affordable lunch fare with curbside appeal. Just pick it up and run.

Charlie Trotter's also carries gift items. Books, gift certificates, videos, food, sauces, T-shirts, knives, and corkscrews even.

If you visit Chicago, your trip will not be complete without lunch or dinner at Charlie Trotter's. It will be an experience you will never forget.
