Lonie Walker's

Looking for an out of the way place to spend an evening? Want an intimate date with that special someone? With a menu of live music, great food and cordial company, there is not a better place to go than The Underground Wonder Bar in Chicago. The best part is they are open longer than most of the other places in town.
The Underground Bar is so named for its suggestive location. Situated on Walton Street just a few blocks from the shores of Lake Michigan, it's housed in an unassuming building. Almost not noticeable to the passerby except for the bright neon sign that points the way to its fabulous.
Opened in 1989, this club is reminiscent of old. With live music every night, it is a music lover's Mecca. It is a welcoming place for lovers of all arts. The music is a mixture of jazz, blues and modern hip hop. Entertainment includes the co-owner Lonie Walker three nights a week. She wails her blues and jazz most Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and you'll be glad you stopped in to listen.
Once a comedy club focused on off-color comedy, Lonie Walker bought it and remodeled the club. She then renamed it with the help of her son, who suggested the name Wonder Bar, and the name stuck.
A small establishment, it does not include a dance floor. However, it is a cozy place just to sit and talk, relax if you will. Mature couples looking for a quiet place to talk or enjoy a light meal will love it. The fare created by a quiet chef spans the globe to include Mexican, Thia, and Middle Eastern dishes, but if you like you can bring your own meal to enjoy.
The Wonder Bar creates the larger than life feeling of a small, cozy lounge. When asked why they return gain and again, regulars all say that, without a doubt, Walker herself is the reason. The Underground Wonder Bar is open with live entertainment 365 days of the year. "Nothing takes longer to come back than a customer who has seen a closed sign in the door," says Collins, Walker's partner.
After other clubs have issued the last call and locked the doors, the Underground Wonder Bar is still inviting guests in. It is the place to check out if you know you'll be out late. In fact, some call it the fabric that makes Chicago what it is.
Go early and stay late. Arrive before the music starts and you will likely find that the cover charge is reduced or even waived. On a recent visit, we found the cover charge to be less than most in the area, even at full charge. Combine that with live music and a delightful atmosphere and you won't be able to stay away. You'll be repeat guest as well. No place in Chicago can beat the Underground Wonder Bar for great people, wonderful music, and excellent food.
